We write songs about it, we celebrate, exploit and
sensationalize it. But what does it really mean to be independent? And can it truly be achieved?
For me, i
ndependence is an interesting concept. Dictionary.com defines
independence as,
"freedom from the control, influence, support, aid or the like, of others."
But having read this, I have to ask myself what that really means to me. As individuals we make hundreds of decisions everyday but, what makes our decisions different from the next persons? Are we truly not influenced by others when we make decisions for ourselves?
George Bernard Shaw said that"
independence is middle class blasphemy. We are all dependent on one another, every soul of us on earth." I look at my life and I know that there is
definitely some truth to that. I am also however, trying to be optimistic that I can
achieve that freedom in all aspects of my life.
My plan for
independence is simple. I will show honesty, patience, courage and humility. I think that if I can do these things
consistently that I will be rewarded accordingly. I will "write the lyrics to my own life...lip
syncing is for sissies!"
What will you do to achieve or maintain your independence?
